ADHD may be a lifetime problem

We usually think of ADHD as a childhood issue and it’s true that the symptoms often first appear in young children.

However, as Jyoti Bhagia, M.D., Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Mayo Clinic Children’s Center, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, points out in her answer to a mother of a 9 year old boy with ADHD,               “Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder…is a chronic, lifelong condition.”

But don’t let this dishearten you! In this Mayo Clinic “Eductional Resource” Dr. Bhagia goes on to talk about treatment and control of the syptoms. She encourages a combination approach of monitored mediction and thoughtful behavioral interventions.

That’s where we come in! In our work with horses, we can help those with ADHD (no matter their age) learn to be more focused and less impulsive. We can help build self-steem, something often diminished by the consequences of ADHD. We can help clients learn and practice self-soothing skills that can help when they find themselves feeling out of control…and this is just a few of the ways that work with horses can be helpful! And the truth is, the earlier these skills are developed the healthier and happier the client’s life will be.

If you or someone you know struggles with ADHD, know that you are not alone. We would be happy to visit with you, show you around our site, introduce you to our horses, learn more about the challenges you are dealing with and share how we might be able to help. Call or email to schedule a tour.
