Serious Consequences of Prenatal Alcohol Exposure

Premature-Baby-DevelopmentThe damage done by prenatal alcohol exposure can be devastating. From low birth weight and birth complications to cognitive challenges, children exposed to drugs (including nicotine!) and/or alcohol while in the womb may carry the burden the rest of their lives.

Added to the possible consequences is now balance and coordination problems. In a study done by The George Institute for Global Health in Sydney, Australia, it was found that the odds of a child Boys runninghaving gross motor skill impairment tripled when the child had a FASD diagnosis or was exposed to a moderate to heavy amount of alcohol while in the womb.

Many of the clients we see are either in foster care or have been adopted out of foster care. It is not hard to imagine that they may have been exposed to harmful substances prior to birth. Though our program is specifically geared toward addressing social, emotional and behavioral problems, through work with Leading 3ahorses, our clients will also be improving both fine and gross motor skills and balance. Grooming and tacking up, and especially riding build muscle strength and balance.

If you know a child that struggles with these issues call or email us to schedule a visit. We will show you around the ranch, introduce you to our horses and learn more about the challenges you are dealing with. We will also share how we may be able to help.
