Technology Addiction

_1454063_children_tv300For my generation, the ‘electronic babysitter’ was television. There were many, many studies that focused on what watching too much television was doing to kids. But I am telling you, today’s technologies are creating a far more dangerous situation.

The social, emotional, cognitive and physical 2959807121_d6315cfd1bimpact of our kid’s ‘addiction’ to technology will be far reaching and this is a conversation we are having with many of our parents. And I’m not just saying this! Though I hate crediting FOX with anything, but this is an interesting interview and transcript (is you can’t/don’t want to watch the video) with Dr. Nicholas Kardaras, Ph.D., LCSW, an addictions specialist and Clinical Director of the Dunes, a holistic mind-body rehab center in Easthampton, N.Y. talking about what a serious problem technology addiction is.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAWork with horses offers many benefits to those dealing with technology addictions. We do not allow ‘devices’ to be turned on during our sessions. Clients are required to engage with not only with their horse, but with the Qualified Mental Health Professional facilitating the session and are encouraged to build a bonded and trusting relationship with their entire treatment team. The client gets physical exercise through leading, grooming and riding their horse. And they have to problem solve, leading to cognitive stimulation as they work on learning and remembering what they need to do to address challenges with their horse.

Though technology has opened the world up for us in many ways, if you have a child or teen that can not seem to put down the phone or turn off the computer you need to find alternatives for them, and work with horses may be enticing enough to get them headed in another direction. We would be happy to have you visit. We will show you around, introduce you to our wonderful horses and share with you how our program works. Call or email us to schedule a visit.
