The Many Faces of Healing Through Work With Horses

There is so much great work going on all over the world helping people heal through work with horses!  And not surprisingly, there are also lots of different methods being used. From traditional Therapeutic Riding, primarily for clients with sever cognitive and physical challenges, to strictly ‘ground work,’ as in the EGALA (Equine Growth and Learning Association) model which is designed to do mental health work, centers all over the world are developing programs to serve the needs of their local community.

In this clip from EGALA’s recent conference, both Temple Grandin and a doctor talk about the value of work with horse.

Nevada Equine Assisted Therapy utilizes ideas and principals promoted by a variety of people/organizations, including EGALA, PATH, O.K. Corral Series and many individual horse practitioners. We ARE doing social, emotional and behavioral growth and learning, as well as providing mental health interventions and we do it with a combination of work on the ground and mounted work.

On the ground our clients learn about horse and herd behavior – why horses do what they do. Thorough leading, grooming and a variety of ground ‘games’ our clients begin to bond with the horse they choose to work with. Each client has very specific goals, which might include increasing focus or overcoming anxiety and these are things that are addressed in each session.

Once our clients are mounted they continue to work on their personal goals, while learning and practicing problem solving skills, multi-tasking and staying focused on what they are supposed to be doing (among other things!)

We take the best of what others have come up with and we have created a program that is well rounded and offers a stimulating and effective variety of activities for those dealing with life challenges. We work with children as young as 4, teens, adults and even seniors.

If you or someone you know is having difficulty with the day-to-day stresses and challenges of life, give us a call or send us an email. We will schedule a time for you to visit our ranch. We will give you a tour, introduce our horses, learn more about what you are dealing with and share how our program may be able to help.
