What is the correlation between sleep and depression?

sleepy-child-1316088245We all know that getting a good night’s sleep is really very important. Though for some, no matter how hard they try, getting to bed and to sleep early just doesn’t happen. And you know they pay for it. But until recently, nobody realized that an out of sync internal clock could be that cause of depression and other mental health disorders.

New research conducted by University of Michigan’s Molecular & Behavioral Neuroscience Institute and Pritzker Neuropsychiatric Disorders Research Consortium is finding links between depression our biological clocks. Interesting.

It may be that they have trouble falling asleep, staying asleep or maybe have nightmares.  We work with them on relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, visualization and body awareness skills. Now we can also suggest that our clients look into having sleep study work done to determine if they have bigger underlying issues.
