When does unhappiness become depression?

Most of us have, at one time or another, felt unhappy with how things are going in our lives. We might wake up and think “man, I just don’t want to go to work today” or “gee, I wish the kids weren’t sick all the time” or even “how come it seems I never have time for myself?!” But most of us manage to pull through these rough patches. We get up and put one foot in front of the other. We just keep going and things do get better. But for many people things do not get better. This is when it’s no longer a case of unhappiness, but depression.

Depression can be debilitating. You can feel like you can’t get out of bed and go to work. You have trouble caring for yourself, let alone your family. This is when it is time for some type of intervention. In her article in the Bangor Daily News, Sarah Smiley shares some of her struggles with depression and how she has come to terms with this disease.
