When is anxiety in children really a problem?

troubled teenYep, kids can worry about all kinds of things. They don’t like it when you leave them with a babysitter. They fret over making friends. They have a melt down trying to decide what to wear to school, or deciding if they want to try out for the baseball team, or school play. Some of this is just part of learning to negotiate through all the ups and downs of life. 312878-5114-25However, in some cases, there is more going on than just typical worry about dealing with life’s little obstacles.

This post on ‘Romper’ talks about some of the signs that may indicate when it is time to seek help for childhood anxiety.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThere are many types of interventions that can help a child dealing with anxiety disorders. Work with horses can be part of the treatment plan. Most kids are eager to interact with horses, even if they are feeling anxious about it. We start by reassuring them that ‘keeping them safe’ is our highest priority. We help them learn that horses can also be ‘anxious’ and teach them how to intact with the horses in a way that reassures them. P1050064We teach self-soothing and calming skills, such as deep breathing and visualization. We gently and slowly expose kiddos to new and changing situations, supporting them and encouraging them as they explore how to work through feelings of anxiety.

We encourage YOU to seek help for your child if you are concerned about their level of anxiety in simply daily situations. We would be happy to show you around the ranch, introduce the horses, learn more about what you and your child are dealing with and share how we may be able to help. Call or email to schedule a visit.
