This is a really nice article (though a little outdated – NARHA is now known as PATH – Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship) about Equine Therapy for the treatment of ADHD.
In our work with kids and teens dealing with ADHD we may address increasing focus, decreasing impulsivity and building self esteem, among other things. We begin our work on the ground, teaching our clients to groom and lead effectively. We encourage our clients to build a relationship with “their” horse, developing effective communication skills. Once mounted, a client will use those communication skills along with their increased focus to direct their horse to do what they want. It’s a partnership and if a child and horse don’t work together they will be going nowhere!
Again, ADHD is just one of the issues that we can address. We would love to show you around the ranch, introduce you to our wonderful horses and hear more about the issues you are dealing with – whether they are your issues, or your child’s/teen’s, horses may be able to help!
