Brain scans show that the frontal pole prefrontal cortex is unique to humans. This is the area that allows us to multi-task and has us considering the consequences of the things we do. In this interesting article researchers talk about how they are really starting to understand the role this small (size of a brussel sprout on up to a tangerine) part of the brain plays.
Many of the clients we work with have difficulty with considering ‘what happens if’. Sadly, we often find that, through in utero exposure to drugs and alcohol, these areas of the brain may be underdeveloped and even damaged. The good news is that with coordinated, firm, fair and consistent interventions, many times these areas of the brain can ‘rewire’ themselves leading to better responses. We work with our clients and their treatment team and caregivers to assure that we are all on the same page and employing the same strategies across environments to help these kids have a shot at improvement.
