Though I think that more and more people are becoming familiar with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) I also feel that there are still a lot of misconceptions as well.
This BBC article is pretty good, though I take exception to use of the term ‘disability’ when talking about those who are challenged with this condition. As the name indicates
ASD is a ‘spectrum’ disorder. As in the general population, they may be high or low functioning, with average, below average and above average abilities in many different areas.
I love that the article addresses the fact that there are really as many girls as boys with these issues, but that girls are not necessarily receiving the interventions they need to overcome the issues related to this disorder. In our program we many girls on the spectrum and have seen incredible growth and change take place.
If you know a child on the Autism Spectrum, be sure to consider all the various interventions that are available. Equine Therapy has been shown to be very beneficial in many cases. We would be happy to show you around the ranch, introduce you to our wonderful horses, learn more about the challenges you are dealing with and share with you how we may be able to help.
