Look, we all have times in our lives when we feel sad. Something goes wrong. We lose out on an opportunity, a job, a promotion, a home we hoped to buy. We lose someone we love through death or divorce. There are many things that we must face that make us feel (justifiably!) sad.
But what happens when ‘sadness’ becomes a constant and disruptive part of your life? When you wake up, but can’t seem to make yourself get out of be? When you no longer find pleasure in things that used to bring you joy? This painful experience may be depression and may require help to get to the other side. Harvard Health Publications lists six common types of depression.
Work with horses can be a powerful part of a treatment plan for dealing with depression. Horses can help us learn to recognize when we are sliding towards depressive thoughts. They can help us learn and implement self-soothing/calming skills that may help when we find ourselves feeling depressed. Many find the very act of grooming a horse to be soothing and calming. And as a warm, engaged and non-judgemental presence, horses can become a living source of love and acceptance.
If you or someone you know is struggling with feelings of unhappiness or depression, seek help. Nevada Equine Assisted Therapy can be an important part of the treatment team. We will be happy to introduce the horses, show you around the ranch, learn more about what you are dealing with and share with you how we may be able to help. Call or email to schedule a visit.
