PTSD may be a time bomb waiting to go off

young-girl-teenager-trouble-sleepingSometimes it seems that there is no ‘real reason’ for a person being hyper-vigilant, but new research, as reported by ‘Red Orbit – Your Universe Online‘ shows that PTSD can be founded on early experiences that may not even be remembered.

The research, done by Dr. Andrew Poulos of UCLA’s Brain Research Institute, shows that even when the memory is not present, the resulting increase in “anxiety related behavior…depressionThese heightened levels of fear and anxiety corresponded with drastic changes in the daily rhythms of the circulating hormone corticosterone.”

We work with many children and teens who are or have been in foster care. In many cases we can only imagine what traumas they have experienced. Through work with horses we may work on developing and woman with horse 3strengthening self-soothing skills, increasing/rebuilding self-confidence and trust in others, as well as increasing the ability to focus on a specific task, something that P1050004can be extremely challenging for someone who is hyper-vigilant.
