For some Mental Health issues simply getting out of the house is a big deal

20160902_150642Working with horses can be a powerful way to reach out to people who struggle with mental health issues. Our clients each have their own unique challenges and we tailor our session plans to address those challenges. It may be that we are working on decreasing impulsivity and increasing P1050390focus, or perhaps we are working on self-soothing and calming skills, but in some cases our biggest task is simply to provide our clients with a reason for leaving the house each week.

We have found that horses can be a powerful motivation to get out and engage. We don’t push clients to ‘accomplish’ anything. They are simply given the opportunity to interact with the horses on whatever level works for them. It may be that watching and talking about horses is Man with horse 3 copywhat a client is up to on any given day or possibly it includes mounted work. We do what works for the client and keeps them engaged.
