Local Horse Therapy Business Wins Cash Award, Vows To Pay It Forward With Senior Program

WASHOE VALLEY, NV, May 11, 2017 — Nevada Equine Assisted Therapy (N.E.A.T.) received a generous donation from the Northern Nevada chapter of the National Association of Industrial and Office Properties (NAIOP) along with three other industry-related organizations. On Saturday, May 6, 2017. N.E.A.T, was honored by the commercial real estate organizations for service to the community. A check was presented to the equine therapy organization at Rancharrah during NAIOP’s Annual Summit Awards.

Nevada Equine Assisted Therapy was both grateful for and pleasantly surprised by the generous gift. “We are rewarded by our clients’ successes every day,” said Laurie Roberts, co-owner of N.E.A.T. “The fact that someone outside our circle values the mental health services we provide is icing on the cake.”

Thanks to the generosity of NAIOP, N.E.A.T. is able to pay it forward by starting a pilot equine therapy program for seniors, similar to those at the University of California at Davis and The Hacienda At The River, a senior living facility in Arizona. “We have always enjoyed the work we’ve done with seniors, and have been researching successful programs for awhile now,” said Bambi Spahr, co-owner of N.E.A.T. “The monetary award from NAIOP is just the push we needed to get the ball officially rolling.”

N.E.A.T. will be collaborating with a variety of local organizations, including the Sierra Association of Foster Families and the University of Nevada Reno’s Sanford Center for Aging, to develop a program that meets the community’s needs.

Nevada Equine Assisted Therapy is also currently entered in a contest to win a Gypsy Vanner horse, which N.E.A.T. owners say would be an ideal horse for work with seniors as well as others. The top 20 equine therapy organizations in the contest will win a free horse. To support N.E.A.T.’s efforts to win, people can vote daily through June 15, 2017.

N.E.A.T. offers social, emotional, behavioral and mental health interventions for children as young as four, teens, adults and seniors. The organization works with individuals, small groups, couples, siblings, and families. Clients come from a variety of referral sources, including self-referral, parents or guardians, teachers, clinicians, and community and social service agencies.

Additional services include preauthorized psycho-social rehabilitation for Medicaid mental health patients.
