We Need to Do Better with Mental Health Screenings

We hear about bullying and violence in our schools almost daily. I’m not sure what it is going to take.

This article ‘Controversy plagues school mental health screenings’ talks about the fact that schools screen for all types of physical issues, but are very rarely are kids assessed for mental health issue and questions whether mental health screenings are a good idea.

Obviously we would need well quailified professionals making the assessments and this would be costly in a time of budget cuts. But can we go on ignoring the fact that so many children/teens are dealing with mental health issues? Issues that put them and those around them in danger. Teen suicide is an epidemic. Teen drug and alchohol use is epidemic. Bullying is constantly in the news. How can our children be expected to learn when they begin to fear for their lives while in school? What are we going to do about this?
