It is heartening to see all the new information that is coming out about autism.
We have known for a very long time that more boys than girls are diagnosed with with autism spectrum disorders. But new research about why is pretty is amazing.
We work with a surprisingly large number of girls on the spectrum. Perhaps it’s got something to do with a girl’s love of horses, but we have girls as young as 5 and several teen girls on the spectrum who are working with horses. They work on completing the simple routine tasks of grooming and tacking up. They may learn and practice a variety of self-soothing techniques, including deep breathing and visualization. They may work on gaining self-awareness, becoming aware of and identify their feelings and noting how their feelings affect the horse. All of this and much more can be accomplished through work with horses. AND OF COURSE WE WORK WITH BOYS ON THE SPECTRUM TOO!
If you care about a child on the spectrum and would like to learn more about how Equine Assisted Therapy might be able to help, call or email us. We will schedule a visit, show you around, introduce you to our wonderful horses, learn more about the challenges you are dealing with and share with you how we may be able to help.
